Why I Started Sundé (And Why It Means So Much More Than Clothing)

The story behind the brand, and why it has always been about so much more than clothing.

If you had told me ten years ago that I would one day be writing this, I don't think I would have believed you.

Not because I didn't dream of building my own clothing brand—I always did—but because I never imagined just how much that dream would ask of me.

I couldn't have imagined the sleepless nights spent worrying about supplier invoices, the excitement of watching my very first order come through, or the feeling of packing parcels from my spare bedroom. I didn't know there would be moments where I would question everything, or that there would also be moments where complete strangers would send me messages telling me they had never felt more comfortable or more confident in their clothes.

Looking back now, I realise Sundé didn't begin when I registered a company or launched a website. It began years before that, long before there was a logo, a collection or even a name. It began with a little girl who was completely fascinated by fashion and a career that slowly taught me that clothing has the power to make people feel something.

That feeling has never left me.

People often ask me why I started Sundé, and for a long time I struggled to answer the question.

The easy answer is that I wanted to start my own clothing brand.

But that isn't the real answer.

The real answer is much more personal than that.

I've always believed that clothes become part of our memories. We remember the jumper we wore on Sunday mornings at home, the hoodie we lived in during university, the leggings we reached for every time we travelled, or the oversized sweatshirt that somehow made us feel safe after a difficult day. Those pieces become part of our everyday lives without us even realising it.

Yet somewhere along the way, the fashion industry became obsessed with chasing the next trend. New collections appeared every few weeks, wardrobes filled up with clothes that were worn once or twice, and shopping became about keeping up rather than choosing pieces that genuinely made us feel good.

I knew I wanted to create something different.

Not because I wanted to change fashion, but because I wanted to change the way women felt when they got dressed.

"Those years shaped me as a designer, but they also shaped my values."

Fashion has been my world for as long as I can remember.

After completing a four-year degree in fashion design, I spent the next decade working in the industry. I had the privilege of working with luxury brands and experienced first-hand what goes into creating beautiful clothing. I learnt about fabrics, garment construction, manufacturing, fit, quality control and the countless decisions that happen long before a product ever reaches a shop floor.

From the outside, fashion often looks glamorous.

Behind the scenes, it's anything but.

It's early mornings and late nights. It's factories, fittings, endless sample reviews and solving problems that customers will never even know existed. Every tiny detail matters, from the weight of a fabric to the placement of a seam.

Those years shaped me as a designer, but they also shaped my values.

I realised I cared far more about creating products that people genuinely loved than chasing seasonal trends. I wanted to design clothing that became someone's favourite piece—not just their newest purchase.

Before Sundé, I actually built another clothing brand.

At the time, I thought I had everything figured out.

I was passionate, determined and willing to work harder than anyone else. I poured every spare minute, every pound I had and every bit of energy into making it succeed.

Like many first businesses, I made mistakes.

Some of them were small.

Others cost me thousands of pounds.

There were moments where I genuinely believed I had failed.

Closing that chapter was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made, and for a while I questioned whether I should ever start another business again.

Looking back now, I realise that brand gave me something far more valuable than success could have.

It gave me experience.

It taught me resilience.

It taught me how to source fabrics, negotiate with factories, solve production issues and, perhaps most importantly, it taught me that building a business isn't about never making mistakes. It's about having the courage to keep going after you've made them.

Without that chapter of my life, Sundé simply wouldn't exist.

"There have been expensive mistakes, difficult decisions and countless moments where I questioned whether I was good enough to keep going."

Of course, building Sundé hasn't been easy. In fact, it's been the hardest thing I've ever done. There have been months where I've wondered how I was going to pay suppliers. There have been launches that kept me awake the night before, terrified that nobody would buy anything. There have been expensive mistakes, difficult decisions and countless moments where I questioned whether I was good enough to keep going.

Social media has a funny way of making entrepreneurship look effortless. It isn't. Behind every launch is a founder carrying far more than anyone sees. Behind every beautiful campaign is months of planning. Behind every sold-out collection are the sleepless nights that came before it. People often tell me, "You're smashing it." I'm incredibly grateful every time someone says that. But the truth is, I'm still figuring it out. I'm still learning. I'm still making mistakes. And I hope I never stop. Because I think that's what building something meaningful really looks like.

As I write this, Sundé is still in its early chapters. There is so much I still dream of creating. More collections. More pop-up shops. More opportunities to meet our community in person. One day, I hope Sundé becomes a brand that women instantly associate with comfort, quality and slowing down. Not because we've shouted the loudest, but because we've stayed true to what we've always believed in. That the best wardrobes aren't built overnight.

The best businesses aren't built overnight either. Both take time. Patience. Consistency. And a willingness to keep showing up, even when nobody is watching. This Journal is my promise to share that journey honestly. Not just the exciting milestones, but the difficult days too. The lessons. The mistakes. The wins. The setbacks. Everything that happens in between. Because if my story helps even one person feel less alone while they're building something of their own, then sharing it will always be worth it.

Thank you for being here at the very beginning.

Whether you've just discovered Sundé or you've supported us since our very first collection, I'm so grateful you're here.

I can't wait to share the rest of the journey with you.

Until next time,

Natasha x
